Volume 32/2 of the ESS Journal analyses higher education’s contribution to the sustainable development goals in the region
The journal Educación Superior y Sociedad ESS (Higher Education and Society), a specialized publication of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, has just published number 32/Nº 2 under the title “Higher Education’s Contribution to the objectives of sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean: experiences and practices from its academic functions”. It deals with the experiences and practices in the area of sustainable development from the academic functions of the region’s Higher Education Institutions (HEI).
The production of knowledge; innovation; information and communication technologies; quality assurance; university management; self-evaluation models; access to higher education; student retention, promotion and graduation; and training, research and extension are analyzed in this issue from the perspective of sustainable development and the efforts of HEI to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations.
This edition also has the participation of Rossana Valéria de Souza e Silva as guest editor. De Souza e Silva is a doctor in education and is currently the director of the Grupo de Cooperação Internacional de Universidades Brasileiras GCUB (Group of International Cooperation of Brazilian Universities). As de Souza e Silva explains in her presentation, the objective of this publication is to know how the HEI have contributed to the advancement of the SDG. It is essential in this crucial moment of the COVID-19 pandemic, to analyze how a sustainable world can be built, first eradicating poverty, protecting the planet and guaranteeing peace and prosperity without exclusion. This will make it possible to achieve the 17 SDG and 169 goals of the United Nation’s Agenda 2030, a document adopted by the leaders of 193 countries in September 2015, by 2030.
The Educación Superior y Sociedad journal, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, has the expert advice of Norberto Fernández Lamarra as general editor. Fernández Lamarra is a specialist in the field of policy, planning, management and evaluation of higher education and currently serves as director of the UNESCO Chair “Education and Future in Latin America”.
The journal Educación Superior y Sociedad (ESS) is a biannual publication, peer-reviewed, indexed and edited by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), based in Caracas, Venezuela since 1990. It is the main body for dissemination and outreach to scientific research in universities and higher education institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions. Its main purpose is to disseminate research work and theoretical studies on the field of higher education and its thematic trends.
