Call for articles submission for the next ESS journal (Vol. 34, No. 1-2022) – Dossier B

UNESCO IESALC invites to submit articles for the thematic dossier of the journal Educación Superior y Sociedad (ESS) “Dossier B: Achieving mutually inclusive internationalization of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean”. An extension of the recent call for its general section and thematic dossiers, the edition will count on guest editors Emma Sabzalieva, Senior Policy Analyst, and Francesc Pedró, UNESCO IESALC Director, and it will be published in the first semester of 2022.

The global political landscape has been shifting in directions that both inspire hope for better futures and continue to raise concerns for the prospects of equity. Higher education around the world has been strongly impacted by these ongoing changes, which have particularly affected internationalization processes relating to mobility, partnerships, teaching, and learning. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated many of the underlying inequalities that had long been present in international higher education, increasing the need to better understand epistemological, geographic, and other disparities.

A recent UNESCO-IESALC report affirmed the values and principles of higher education internationalization as ‘promoting intercultural learning, inter-institutional cooperation based on mutual benefit, solidarity, mutual respect, and fair partnership’ (UNESCO-IESALC, 2021, p. 40*).

This special issue of ESS, guest edited by Emma Sabzalieva and Francesc Pedró (UNESCO IESALC), invites submissions that take up the call for internationalization of higher education that is mutually inclusive. The special issue focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) as a region that has been instrumental in driving forward thinking on decoloniality, but also welcomes articles examining LAC in comparative perspective as well as those that are grounded in other global contexts. Potential topics for articles in this special issue could include: decoloniality and internationalization, the role of internationalization as a strategic tool in development, the interplay of political shifts and international higher education, and addressing inequalities in internationalization.

The new closing date for submissions is November, 30 2021.

All articles received will be subjected to anonymous external peer review (double blind).
