The Third World Higher Education Conference (WHEC) held recently in Barcelona, Spain, was a unique opportunity to strengthen collaborative ties between individuals and organizations, with more than 2,000 participants from 139 countries and more than 8,000 who connected online to the various debates that took place.

The Conference engaged ministers, academics, researchers, students, teachers, entrepreneurs, civil society and the private sector in more than 120 roundtables and side events; 86 HED talks and 5 youth-led activities.

The UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) played a leading role during the Conference, by facilitating and participating in 17 events (15 round tables and 2 side events), between May 18 and 20. Also, the Institute contributed to the elaboration of 6 background documents, and officially launched 4 reports on priority themes.

At the closing of the Conference, held from 18 to 20 May in Barcelona, Spain UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini introduced a roadmap entitled “Beyond Limits: New Ways to Reinvent Higher Education” that outlines key principles and transitions to reorient higher education in the decade ahead. An online consultation on the document will be organized over the next months, with its outcome informing the SDG4 global roadmap to be adopted in November by the High-Level Steering Committee.

Below we present a final balance of the sessions organized by IESALC and the most relevant ideas associated with the topics that set the tone of the discussion in Barcelona, Spain, considered substantial for the debate on the future of global higher education.
