Document offers general guidelines to HEIs for the implementation of sustainability

Within the framework of the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit, which takes place in New York (United States), on September 18 and 19, “SET4HEI. General Guidelines for the Implementation of Sustainability in Higher Education Institutions”. Its objective is to provide orientation for higher education institutions (HEIs) leaders to systematize and maximize the contributions of their institutions towards the United Nations 2030 Agenda.  

The need for faster progress towards achieving the SDGs, the unique position of HEIs to accelerate this progress, and the interests of HEI leaders towards sustainability are the foundations of this document, jointly developed by the United Nations Academic Impact Initiative (UNAI) and UNESCO IESALC.    

The document outlines the essential elements that can help HEIs systematize their approach and increase their contribution to the SDGs by becoming more sustainable organizations. These guidelines are a starting point that highlights general steps to consider and high-level actions to lead a shift towards sustainability within HEIs.   

The presentation also showcased best practice cases and testimonials from faculty, staff and students who are actively contributing to the implementation of the SDGs. 

The event was attended by Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General for Education, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO; Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division, United Nations Department of Global Communication; Francesc Pedró, Director of UNESCO IESALC; Victoria Galán-Muros, Head of Research and Analysis at UNESCO IESALC and Omar Hernández, Program Manager and Public Information Officer, United Nations Academic Impact.
