How are higher education institutions using artificial intelligence?
Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, Artificial Intelligence applications have multiplied and their use has extended throughout education, including higher education. Higher education institutions are increasingly recognizing the potential of AI to personalize learning, streamline administrative processes, and improve student outcomes. AI applications such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, and automated grading systems are being progressively adopted in higher education institutions. However, the integration of AI in pedagogy requires careful consideration of various factors including ethical implications, data privacy, and the digital divide.
The integration of AI in pedagogy within higher education holds significant promise for enhancing educational practices and outcomes. By understanding current applications, identifying best practices, addressing challenges, and implementing strategic recommendations, higher education institutions can harness the power of AI to create more effective and inclusive learning environments.
During 2023, the research and foresight team at UNESCO IESALC worked in the development of two documents: ChatGPT and AI in Higher Education: A quick start guide for higher education stakeholders and Harnessing Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: A Primer for higher education stakeholders.
During 2024, UNESCO IESALC aims to publish a series related to AI & Pedagogy, including practical guidelines for developing AI-driven pedagogical practices. For the development of this series, we are interested in understanding how higher education institutions are currently utilizing AI; identifying best practices where AI has significantly enhanced educational outcomes and exploring challenges faced in integrating AI into pedagogy.
For this purpose, we are launching a short survey targeted at students, teachers and higher education institutions broadly with the aim of gathering information from higher education institutions on their current use of AI in pedagogy.
The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and all responses will be used for research purposes. Available until June 27th, 2024.
