More than a year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, students of higher education institutions in Latin America continue to be affected by the full or partial closure of their study centers; changing the modality of delivery from face-to-face classes to virtual.
In this context, UNESCO-IESALC presents the following map on the current status of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean due to COVID-19, including information on internet access and the vaccination status in those countries.
The map shown below shares the current situation of HEI and how they affect students, identifying the following states 1:
- Fully open: face-to-face classes.
- Partially open: HEI are:
- Hybrid/by region/by program: open (face-to-face) in certain regions and for some programs, and/or where apply hybrid learning.
- Hybrid/by region: open in certain regions with hybrid learning and closed in others with virtual classes.
- Hybrid/by program: open for some grades, levels or age groups (e.g. laboratories, clinical courses, etc.) with hybrid learning and closed for others with virtual classes.
- Hybrid: open with reduced face-to-face classes and virtual classes (distance learning).
- Closed due to COVID-19: Government-mandated closures of HEI affecting most or all of the student population.
- Academic break: HEI across the country are on scheduled academic breaks for most or all the student population, no teaching activities.
- No data: there is no information for that country.

These plans refer to the next academic cycle -second semester 2021 or first semester 2022- which depends on the level of COVID-19 cases, the progress of vaccination and the protocols defined by each country.
