WAHED | Panel Discussion: Flexible Learning Pathways in a post-pandemic context- Insight on case studies from Chile, South Africa and Finland

Since 2018 over 300 organisations from over 50 countries have participated in the World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED) delivering events and activities and engaging in research project that can make a tangible difference to equitable access and success in higher education across the world. In 2021 the 4th World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED) will take place on November 17th. 

WAHED 2021: Who will be going to university in 2030? will focus on how we can ensure that equitable access and success is a priority for universities and governments as we learn to live with the ongoing impact of the pandemic and where there may be examples of innovatory work emerging. The theme for this year is Equitable access and success through and post the pandemic focused on how we can shape a more equitable future for higher education. 

It will include 5 different sessions covering:

• Evidence and data: what do we know about how/where participation rates are changing?
• Roles of government: how can it support equity priority groups post pandemic?
• Role of universities: where is innovative practice and who are the ‘global equity leaders’?
• Flexible pathways into HE: what do they look like and where do they exist?
• The way forward for equitable access in HE: what steps should we take to make HE participation more equitable by 2030?

Team Finland Knowledge Network through its representatives in Latin America and Southern Africa wishes to contribute to the goal of more equal access and opportunity in higher education for all by arranging a panel discussion titled Flexible Learning Pathways in a post-pandemic context- Insight on case studies from Chile, South Africa and Finland. The aim of this panel is to discuss how the pandemic has affected to access higher education and successfully get through higher education studies. Discussion is based on the UNESCO led Flexible Learning Pathways (FLP) research project and three case studies. The session will focus on what issues have supported making the system and study pathways more flexible or, on the contrary, have we taken steps backwards? The discussion is expected to offer inspiration, and practical advice for global Higher Education Community in advancing equitable, supportive and efficient learning pathways in Higher Education.

Francesc Pedró, UNESCO IESALC director, will participate in this panel discussion which will be held on November 17th, 2021 at 10:45-12:45 (local time in Santiago, Chile). Michaela Martin, Coordinator of the IIEP-UNESCO FLP, will give the closing remarks.
